FIRST THEY CAME
“ First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”
- (By Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984)
Our remit is to make Hertfordshire a “discrimination free” county. The key to achieving this is combating prejudice, misinformation and breaking down the barriers that we have built with ‘them and us’ attitudes. We cannot allow this to happen, and we need your support to help us carry out our mission.
The work we undertake supports all disadvantaged communities living in Hertfordshire. Some of our communities have suffered extreme trauma, and we support disadvantaged and marginalised groups and organisation within our County.
We need to raise income to realise our vision of strategically working with individuals and communities so as to provide best possible support for people affected by racism, discrimination and prejudice
HEC welcomes charitable donations from individuals, companies or organisation, whether you would like to make a simple one-off donation or if you would like to support us on a more regular basis, rest assured that all donations will be gratefully accepted and used to further our equality and community cohesion work.
Your donations contribute to our everyday running costs and overheads to provide support and representation for victims of discrimination, hate crime and harassment.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone that has supported us over the past year and helped to make this possible. If you would like to support us this year here are some easy ways you can do so...

Leave a lasting legacy to the Hertfordshire Equality Council by including a gift in your Will to Hertfordshire Equality Council
Why leave a gift to charity in your Will?
Writing a Will is an important way to ensure your wishes are carried out and that your savings and possessions are given to the people you choose to receive them.
Charitable legacies are exempt from Inheritance tax, which means you can reduce the overall tax bill for your loved ones by naming a charity in your Will.
Leaving a gift to charity does not have to mean leaving a large amount of money. A small gift can make a huge difference to a local charity. Charitable legacies are vital in enabling Hertfordshire Equality Council to continue our work across the County.
To leave us money in your will, consult your solicitor. You can leave either a set sum, or a percentage of your estate (perhaps after giving the majority of it to family). It is important to give your solicitor our full name Hertfordshire Equality Council and our Charity Number: 1151523. Please get in touch with us if you need any more advice on this.
Donations by Cheque
